Pictograms

In this design exercise, participants choose a city from a list and research its cultural aspects. Their task is to create a cohesive set of 16 pictograms that represent the city’s essence, focusing on traditions, cuisine, celebrations, and more. Over four weeks, participants work in groups of 3-4, ensuring visual consistency and a shared design language across the icons. The icons can cover various themes related to the city, and colour variations are required.

Packaging Design

Participants in this design exercise are required to re-design the packaging of a well-known product, utilizing their knowledge of Illustrator and Photoshop. The assignment also involves creating a physical paper mockup as part of the final submission. The exercise centres around rebranding a popular drink into convenient Tetra-pack mini boxes and emphasizes both digital design skills and hands-on experimentation with physical materials.

Poster Design

The students are tasked with designing an A4 music poster using abstract elements, geometric shapes, and typography. They choose an artist from a list to interpret their music visually. Constraints include a 3-colour palette and no figurative representations. Students create an A4 poster that captures the music’s essence through abstract and geometric shapes, starting with sketches. Their design is limited to abstractions, shapes, typography, and the set colour palette. While colour use is limited, they can use variations and effects for depth. The poster should include the artist’s name and album title. Choosing an unfamiliar artist or genre is suggested for fresh creativity.
